Putting together all the parts is the fun of making these videos. Clues emerged immediately after my meeting how to go about it. A soft spoken, poetic man, I felt Richard would not be comfortable in front of the camera with a mic in his face. But he had an interesting back story to tell. So I chose to record his story off camera and have his narrative play over the video. I felt the camera work had to be loose and flowing, for the most part, rather than on a tripod. I wanted the viewer to feel as though walking through the space, and his thought process. I requested some music from him, and that really set the tone of the video. Once I had the main body, it was just the opening and closing to round it all out. His studio is in an interesting building, so I took advantage of that space. We both agreed a bike intro would be fun. I loved the quality of the light in the interior stairwells for the portrait with his dogs, and the roof to give the video a sense of place.

Profiles In Design: Ace & Jig

October 13th, 2011

Cary Vaughan and Jenna Wilson are the collaborative team behind Ace & Jig, a “seasonless” women’s collection made from yarn-dye woven fabric. I was attracted to the backstory behind the brand. Both interned together in the fashion industry and became fast friends. They went on to design for Language NYC, and launched LaROK in 2004 to great success, before starting Ace & Jig. It’s a family operation of sorts: the company’s name is derived from their kid’s nicknames. I wanted to draw out a short lifestyle narrative around this story of friendship, family and fashion design. I photographed them at A&J home/studio in Brooklyn. For more of their story visit Ace & Jig.

Video: Glassblowing

August 26th, 2011

Wanting to continue my work on video capture, editing and general workflow, I approached Liz Crawford and Nate Hoogs about producing a video of their working process. I also recorded some audio this time around. The studio banter, tools sounds, and some local atmosphere (freight train!) fit well in the very beginning and the end of the piece, while the bouncy acoustic music propelled the main part of the video.

Glass & Water Video Short

March 10th, 2011

Here is a look at a recently completed video. I wanted to do a really short video around a still life theme. I had a vague idea on paper about working with glass bottles outside and wrote notes about water, moisture, etc. A brief trip down south to visit family provided an opportunity to give it a go.

I knew I would have a hard time finding a starting point when it came time to edit. Things were left wide open, so I had many abstract clips but no declared beginning or end. After many different variations, this brief “story” eventually emerged. While I was shooting, the dance of the water brought to mind the beginning of Paul Simon’s “Can’t Run But” from Rhythm Of The Saints. It’s a great melody line and stuck in my head. I decided the song’s beginning would be a nice soundtrack.

All my video work can now be found under its own tab on the main page of my site.

Entertainment feature in CC & G for January. The four page spread was shot at the home of Kim and Jamie Cooper. Jamie is the chef/owner of Bonda in Fairfield. We all enjoyed the Cooper’s hospitality for this wide ranging shoot that touched on a lot of subject matter – and some tasty food.

Feeling Minimal

October 31st, 2010

Below are a few samples of work produced recently with prop stylist Deborah Williams. I have been in a strip-it-down-minimal mood lately. My direction for the shoot was just that – and that I wanted organic materials combined with clean surfaces. Deborah is a really intuitive stylist and read it well. These few in particular stood out for me.

For some time, I have been thinking about how to incorporate video as an extension of the work I do. I considered subject matter for some time because I wanted it to relate to my still photography work. I went ahead with this little “portrait of a house”.

The first thing that jumped out at me with video is the importance of a narrative arc. It’s sort of obvious, and I knew that, but I found myself thinking more carefully about the whole before I began to shoot the parts. Story line becomes essential. Editing is all of a sudden a really important skill. Editing stills is important, but things can be left open-ended because the images are often supported by text to assist the story flow. Video is a self-contained world. I thought about creating a story board, but quickly realized that would be too limiting and kill the joy of finding surprising images. And it’s not like this was a feature-length film. I decided instead to keep a visual outline in my head and carry that around with me when I shot.
