An ongoing series features the furniture designer Richard Wrightman in his studio in Long Island City, Queens.

Putting together all the parts is the fun of making these videos. Clues emerged immediately after my meeting how to go about it. A soft spoken, poetic man, I felt Richard would not be comfortable in front of the camera with a mic in his face. But he had an interesting back story to tell. So I chose to record his story off camera and have his narrative play over the video. I felt the camera work had to be loose and flowing, for the most part, rather than on a tripod. I wanted the viewer to feel as though walking through the space, and his thought process. I requested some music from him, and that really set the tone of the video. Once I had the main body, it was just the opening and closing to round it all out. His studio is in an interesting building, so I took advantage of that space. We both agreed a bike intro would be fun. I loved the quality of the light in the interior stairwells for the portrait with his dogs, and the roof to give the video a sense of place.

Sound was recorded by Spencer Moore

Cary Vaughan and Jenna Wilson are the collaborative team behind Ace & Jig, a “seasonless” women’s collection made from yarn-dye woven fabric. I was attracted to the backstory behind the brand. Both interned together in the fashion industry and became fast friends. They went on to design for Language NYC, and launched LaROK in 2004 to great success, before starting Ace & Jig. It’s a family operation of sorts: the company’s name is derived from their kid’s nicknames. I wanted to draw out a short lifestyle narrative around this story of friendship, family and fashion design. I photographed them at A&J home/studio in Brooklyn. For more of their story visit Ace & Jig.

I also recorded some audio this time around. The studio banter, tools sounds, and some local atmosphere (freight train!) fit well in the very beginning and the end of the piece, while the bouncy acoustic music propelled the main part of the video.
Equipment: Canon 7D 17-40mm, 85mm Lenses
Audio: Zoom H4n Recorder
Editing: Final Cut

Here is a look at a recently completed video. I wanted to do a really short video around a still life theme. I had a vague idea on paper about working with glass bottles outside and wrote notes about water, moisture, etc. A brief trip down south to visit family provided an opportunity to give it a go.

I knew I would have a hard time finding a starting point when it came time to edit. Things were left wide open, so I had many abstract clips but no declared beginning or end. After many different variations, this brief “story” eventually emerged. While I was shooting, the dance of the water brought to mind the beginning of Paul Simon’s “Can’t Run But” from Rhythm Of The Saints. It’s a great melody line and stuck in my head. I decided the song’s beginning would be a nice soundtrack.

All my video work can now be found under its own tab on the main page of my site.
