Profile of furniture designer Richard Wrightman in his studio in Long Island City, Queens.
Soft spoken and private, I felt Richard Wrightman would not be comfortable in front of the camera with a mic in his face.
But he had an interesting backstory to tell. This came out as we walked around the Metropolitan Building, a funky and popular studio that houses his basement workspace in Long Island City. I chose to record his story off camera and have his narrative play over the video instead. I took advantage of the roof views, which give the video it’s sense of place. We both agreed a bike intro would be fun, as it seems to be his main mode of transportation from his NYC apartment each day.
And I loved the quality of the light in the interior stairwells for the portrait with his dogs, his ever present studio companions.
